This is a remarkable account of a journey that begins in Morrocco and ends in Turkey. I'm still in Syria, but anyone who wants to get a glimpse of the complexities and contradictions, on the ground, in this region of the world, can't afford to miss this erudite and fascinating travelogue. His deep understanding of medieval Islamic thought and history and the Muslim scholarly tradition is outstanding.
