Ever since I visited Sudan in 2006, I've been wondering what China has been up to in Africa. In the last 12 months, this story has started receiving the publicity and attention it deserves. A recent article in FastCompany magazine by Richard Behar brings alot of nuance and sensitivity to this topic. China is "conquering" Africa right in front of our eyes. And that's not to say that I believe the West should conquer Africa a second time, or that Africa doesn't deserve an opportunity to develop and advance and grow prosperous. I guess my concern is more rooted in the vision that Behar claims, that Africa will just become an empty husk, sucked dry of all its mineral and natural resources and never able to stand on its own two feet.
The NY Times also ran a series of articles in the last year and in case you missed them, they too are quite worth reading. Today the BBC online posted an article about how China is helping Niger to develop its oil fields.
Have you heard of Aluka? Go see www.aluka.org. You have to raise awareness about Aluka in Niger. Aluka is a non-profit disseminating important research and knowledge about Africa online. It is free to all educational and research organizations in Niger (and the rest of Africa). It also has a ton of materials about African rock art - including the rock art of Niger.
