There's lots to be proud of in the election of Barack Obama. He inherits a devastated national economy, public confidence rocked by two wars, and a divided electorate. Obviously that electorate is far less divided than it was 8 or 4 years ago, but that is more a result of intransigence and incompetence rather than confidence. Last night's speech demonstrated his humility and magnanimity in victory - a trait sorely lacking from our current regime. Barack's victory though also speaks to a global yearning for progress and cooperation - that 'New World Order' that was on the tip of all our tongues as the walls in Berlin came tumbling down. The challenges that we face today are somewhat more daunting then those we faced 10 or 15 years ago. So the hard work begins. But lest we become too immersed in the gritty details of policy and what must actually change, we should remember that 8 year old boy in Roxbury I mentored in 1991. We should also take pause and reflect on what it means for us a nation given the international focus and spotlight on this election.
